MICHAEL TRUONG
Michael is a Vietnamese-Canadian, born and raised in British Columbia, Canada.
Michael completed his Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences, majoring in Criminology, at Simon Fraser University. He went on to pursue his law degree at Thompson Rivers University, graduating in 2014 as part of the second inaugural class and reaching the Dean’s List in multiple years. After completing law school at Thompson Rivers University, he completed his first summer articles at Downtown Community Court, working closely with his late mentor and friend, Kelly K. Connell, Q.C., who he knew since his childhood. He credits Kelly as being one of the most influential people in his life, and a significant reason for his interest and success in the legal field. He completed his second summer articles with a prominent criminal law firm, Johnson Doyle Sugarman (as it was known then).
In 2015, Michael completed his articles with a law firm in the Fraser Valley. He stayed on as an associate and in 2021, he became partner. There, he met Daniel Sorensen and Jas Gill-Kahlon, and in 2025, together, they founded Sorensen Truong LLP.
Michael has extensive experience across a wide range of practice areas, focusing on business, real estate, wills and estates, and employment law.
Michael is an experienced litigator who has represented clients and been successful at all levels of court in British Columbia, including Provincial Court, Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeal. He has appeared in front of a range of administrative bodies, including the Residential Tenancy Branch, the Employment Standards Branch, the BC Human Rights Tribunal, the Labour Relations Board, the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board, WorkSafeBC, and the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal. He has also resolved numerous matters through mediation and arbitration, developing practical, creative and effective strategies to achieve out-of-court settlements where appropriate.
In addition to his litigation practice, Michael is also an experienced solicitor. He has assisted clients with general contracts, corporate reorganizations, corporate transactions, real estate transactions, personal and commercial borrowing and lending, wills and estates planning including powers of attorney, representation agreements and trusts, employment-related matters including preparation and implementation of contracts and workplace policies, disciplinary measures and terminations, and residential and commercial lease review and negotiation.
In his practice, Michael emphasizes a practical, cost-effective and honest approach that focuses on providing options and achieving solutions that meet with his clients’ specific needs, goals, and circumstances.
Outside of law, Michael is an avid hockey fan and foodie. Through the good times and bad times, his loyalty and support for his Vancouver Canucks is unwavering. He is a foodie through and through, primarily because his wife is a self-taught culinary wizard. Together with their kids, they love trying new restaurants and going back to their favorite restaurants. If you ever want a restaurant suggestion, he will have many!
